Mission
Statement:
To
assist and promote the development of the Shellfish Industry in
the United Kingdom.
SAGB
History
The
Shellfish Association of Great Britain (SAGB) was founded as the
Oyster Merchants’ and Planters’ Association in 1903
and renamed in 1969. The SAGB is the Shellfish industry’s
trade body and the director and staff are based at Fishmongers’
Hall in the City of London. Shellfish farmers, groups of fishermen,
commercial traders and companies,
the Seafish Industry Authority and many of the Sea Fisheries Committees
are members. The range of species marketed and activities covered
have extended gradually in its 103 years of service to the industry.

What
SAGB can do for you
The
Association provides members with representational support on
various topics of interest to the shellfish industry and also
free technical advice. The SAGB has mediated on a range of environmental
issues ranging from coastal pollution, aggregate dredging to stock
conservation. The Association maintains a good working relationship
with various conservation bodies and advises on various topical
issues. The Association furthermore strives to inform its members
about new technical advances in the industry, new legislation
and marketing opportunities.

Representatives
The
President of the Association is Mr Maldwin Drummond, OBE JP DL
Hon D.Sc. The Chairman is Norman Young, whose family has been
involved with seafood for generations and the Vice Presidents
are Mr. Cyril Lucas, OBE, Mr. Gerald Gardner, Dr Eric Edwards,
OBE and Capt. C.P.H. Gibbon (RN ret’d).

Shellfish Technology and Training - Dr. Sue Utting
Dr.
Peter Hunt joined the organisation as Director after a long and
varied career in commercial fisheries. The Assistant Director,
Dr. Clive Askew, has extensive experience of molluscan fisheries
and aquaculture. SAGB's Office Manager is Lorraine Andrews and
Ms Susan Gladstone is SAGB's Membership Secretary.
Membership
of the SAGB is open to all bona fide persons involved with shellfish.
